Two men of Indian origin, were arrested in relation to the violent death of a bouncer in Queens when he interfered to end a brawl only to be beaten brutally and suffering a heart attack.
Deonarine Deoraj and Harrydat Nandalall, residents of Queens, were arrested March 12 night and are facing charges of manslaughter and gang assault, in the death of Elsworth “Dale” Reid, 42, news reports said.
ABC7NY news reported online that Deoraj was also charged with criminal possession of marijuana. Reid, a bouncer at Johnny’s Restaurant and Bar in South Ozone Park, was trying to break up a two-person brawl and suffered a cardiac arrest as he was being beaten. He did not recover, police said, and was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.
The bar where the fight took place is located across from the Resorts World Casino which has an active nightlife. Residents told ABC the bar was the scene of frequent fights and violence. One of Reid’s friends, Bobby Stanley, told the Daily News, “I’m not surprised. They always have barroom fights there. Cops are always over there on the weekend. People there can’t hold their liquor.”
Laverne Reid, the dead man’s wife, who once worked at Johnny’s as a waitress, told the Daily News, “It’s always violent—I know myself, working there. They always have fights. And he’s always there to separate them, made sure no one got hit.”
The New York Post reported up to eight people may have been involved in the fight. The Gothamist reported Reid was knocked out by a punch to the temple, and fell to the ground hitting his head hard on the ground. “When he fell, all the guys started jumping in and hitting on him as he’s laying there and that was it,” his wife, Laverne Reid, told the Daily News. “Everybody punched him and he was already dead.”
