A Staten Island woman of South Asian origin has been charged with murder in the death of her newborn baby who was found by police in a trash bag outside her front door March 12.
Twenty eight year old Nausheen Rahman was charged on two counts, murder and concealment of a human corpse, several news outlets reported.
Police found the child’s body after suspicious staff at Staten Island University Hospital alerted them. Rahman walked into the hospital complaining of bleeding following a child birth. However, hospital staff found no record of Rahman giving birth and called police. According to news reports, Rahman changed her story under questioning, first contending the baby was born 5 days earlier, then that it was born two days ago.
The baby reportedly died March 11, and next morning the police recovered the body after receiving a 911 call. The child’s body was found in the garbage-can a few feet from the condominium where she lives at 174 Richmond Hill Road in New Springville, Staten Island, the New York Times reported. The cause of death is still being determined.
Rahman was initially accused of hiding human remains, a charge that was upgraded to second degree murder after the body was found. According to the medical examiner, the baby was alive when dumped in the garbage can, according to scallywagandvagabond.com, which sourced an NBC 4 report.
There is no information about Rahman’s marital status, though neighbors are quoted telling media outlets that she had lived with her family for several years at the condominium.
Neighbor Mike Stanganelli told WNBC-TV, “I think it’s terrible. And I’m shocked because this is a very good neighborhood. The whole complex is pretty close too, so for this to go unknown, it’s interesting.”
