Over 100 immigrants, including South Asians, Latinos, Filipinos and East Asians, rallied on Aug. 22 in support of Michael Brown, who was killed by the police in Ferguson, Missouri on Aug. 9. The immigrant protestors held signs and chanted, “No justice, no peace,” and “Black lives matter,” sending a signal that they wanted an end to all police killings.

The rally organized by Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM) – South Asian Organizing Center was joined by Ugnayan, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Legal defense Fund (NAACP LDF), Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence (CAAAV), New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE), New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), International Socialist Organization (ISO ), Brooklyn Defenders, and many immigrant community members.

“As an undocumented immigrant, I have been organizing to end deportations of immigrants, including my families, by saying ‘not one more.’ Today we also say ‘not one more’ to police killings in Black communities,” DRUM member Nayim was quoted in a press release as saying.

Another one of the speakers, Roksana Mun from DRUM, said, that as immigrant communities, we know that we stand upon the shoulders of Black communities and their struggles in this country. “And at a moment when the Black communities of Ferguson are under siege, we stand in solidarity to proclaim that Black lives matter,” she added.

Over two dozen of the youth wore t-shirts with drawings and slogans on the front, and the names of those killed by police on the back – Eric Garner, Shantel Davis, Amadou Diallo, Aiyana Jones, Ramarley Graham, the press release said.
