The Club of Indian Women (CIW) collaborated with Raaz Boutique and New Delhi designer Niki Mahajan to present a fashion show themed “A journey through the life of Begum Hazrat Mahal of Awadh” on August 17 here at the Waterford Banquets. Many of the 150 guests rushed to buy saris, suits, and evening gowns, a release from CIW said.

Mahajan has worked for the last 15 years with artisans from Bihar, Rajasthan, Assam and non-governmental organizations from remote corners of India. She specializes in bridal wear, western and Indian trousseau, and prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) lines, with emphasis on clean cut silhouettes and intricate handwork.

Before Mahajan’s lines were displayed, the show began with a dozen women from the audience dressed in today’s fashions walking the ramp. Two were selected, one for being most stylish and the other for her intricate hairdo. Suman Mohlajee chaired the fashion show, which was emceed by Urmilla Chawla. Local artistes Raju Bankapur and Pratibha Jairath had the audience tapping their feet and singing along.

The CIW was established in 1978 as a platform for non-resident Indian women to meet and share their challenges of adapting to American way of life. Today, it has expanded to include the Indo-Crisis Line, the Network of Professional Women and the Senior Citizen group. The organization holds book discussions, cooking demonstrations, literary slams, seminars on relationships, parenting, financial matters and more.
