Jersey City Asian Merchants Association was last week given New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Awards for Public Service along with Fountain of Salvation Church for providing 36,000 meals to the homeless and poor in Jersey City and Hoboken, New Jersey.
The honor was bestowed at an event held in Newark Museum June 6 attended among others by New Jersey Lieutenant Governor/Secretary of State Kim Guadagno.
Raju Patel, President of Jersey City Asian Merchant Association, was honored by New Jersey State Assembly and Senate for leading community participants to make a difference. Jersey City Asian Merchant Association and Govinda Sanskar Center have traditionally organized one of the biggest Navratri Festivals on India Square in Jersey City.
N.J. Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto noted that the majority of the honorees are from Gujarat, and asked the assembly to work on establishing Sister State Relationship between New Jersey and Gujarat.
JCAMA and Govinda Center are running free eye clinics once every month for people who cannot afford to pay. JCAMA is also instrumental in providing scholarships to Hudson County Community College students, have helped raising funds for the education, health, special activity for children.
