Dr. Jatin P. Shah, Elliot W. Strong Chair in Head and Neck Cancer Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, who retired earlier this month, was presented a festschrift, a bound volume of highly-acclaimed scientific works of his students and trainees, as a mark of honor to the surgical oncologist last week
The presentation of the 52-piece festschrift and the celebration of his leadership were held in honor of Shah, who has been on the Faculty at MSKCC for 42 years. The celebration consisted of a welcome reception at Connolly’s Restaurant June 3, and a scientific symposium at MSKCC, followed by a gala dinner at Cipriani’s June 4.
Shah’s festschrift consisted of 52 such high-quality scientific works published in peer-reviewed journals with a high impact factor. Seventy eight fellows have trained under the mentorship of Shah, until now.
They have gone on to become full professors, department chairmen and head of institutions all over the world.
The festschrift event was attended by world leaders in head and neck surgery and oncology from 28 countries around the world, and from all parts of the United States. In addition to being the chief of the head and neck cancer program for 23 years, Shah has been president of nearly all scientific societies in the field of head and neck cancer and established the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies, (IFHNOS) in 1987, and continues to serve as it’s CEO.
He has received honorary PhD, and D.Sc. degrees from Belgium, Greece and India, and Honorary FRCS from Edinburgh, London and Australia. He has received dozens of medals for his scientific achievements, including medals from the Royal Society of Medicine, Semon Medal from U.K., Blokhin Medal from Russia, Holmgren Medal from Sweden, Ferafini medal from Italy, Janeway medal from the American radium Society, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2009.
An honorary member of numerous scientific societies in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America, Shah has authored 13 text books, which have been also published in Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish and Russian languages. He has published over 550 peer-reviewed scientific articles. Shah expressed his appreciation to “all those who made a difference in his life”, including family members, professionals and friends.
He said in his career much has been accomplished, but much more remains to be done. He announced that he will continue all his professional activities at MSKCC, including patient care, teaching, training and research.
