Bishop Ahr high school freshman Ariyana Agarwala, a rising star from Edison, New Jersey, made headlines last week when she was declared the 2015 Home News Tribune Gymnast of the Year after capturing a share of first place on the uneven bars.

According to news reports she took first place in the GMC all-around, uneven bars, balance beam and floor routine and placed second in vault. At the NJSIAA North Group II sectional final, Agarwala placed first in the all-around along with bars and beam, while finishing second on vault. She also placed first on the bars at the NJSIAA championship meet.

“She came in and was not only able to turn in the high level of gymnastics in her routines, but she was able to hit the big routines when it really counted,” her Coach Caitlin Miller was quoted as saying by myCentralJersey.com. “I think it’s hard when you know you have your team looking at you to put up a big score, but she was able to do it every single time.”
Reports said that the season could have potentially been problematic for Bishop Ahr, but for her.

Agarwala was one of the catalyzing forces that kept the team along a winning path in the season. Miller said that Ariyana was a huge contributor to the school’s successes as a team. “Knowing that her routines are consistent and that she has confidence in herself — she really leads by example.

She’s able to go up there calm and steady whether we put her third, fourth or fifth in the lineup, and it just gets the girls around her on the same page,” the coach was quoted as saying.

“She’s absolutely breathtaking to watch,” Miller said. “She has these long, beautiful lines, which gives her bar and beam routines an extra spark, and plus she carries herself like a much older, refined gymnast,” the coach said.

In comments myCentralJersey.com wrote that watching Agarwala “makes it hard to believe that she’s a freshman” as she seems accustomed to winning already that when she walks up to receive an award. She is described as very poised and under control not easily found in someone who just left middle school.

Agarwala said that she feels good as a freshman. “It’s a big achievement,” Agarwala said of her overall performance. “There are a lot of good gymnasts here and I respect that. This shows me that I can be great too if I keep working hard,” she said, according to the news website.

“It was a good bars routine for me,” Agarwala said. “I knew if I tried my best I had a chance, and that’s what happened. I felt confident going into my last event. I wanted to pull through and finish the meet strong.”
