The Sarvamangala Sri Saneeswara Temple and Community Center of New York located in Queens, last month celebrated it first anniversary with religious events, a talent show and a gala dinner. The temple, run by the Shri Navagraha Devasthanam of North America, is the first temple outside India dedicated to Lord Saneeswara. The group plans to build nine more Navagraha temples in North America to Vedic culture and spirituality in North America, a temple press release said. Each of the temple will emphasize a different deity of the Navagraha.

The New York temple was inaugurated on March 23,  2014 and Prana Pratishta and Kumbha Abhishekam were completed and simultaneous Maha Homam and Japam were performed by Vedic pundits and scholars in India.

Navagrahas refer to the nine celestial bodies in Cosmos that are said influence the life of people on earth. They are respectively Ravi (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Angharakha (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Sukra (Venus), Sani (Shri Saneeswara (Lord of Saturn)), Rahu and Ketu.

The energy Saturn, on which the New York temple is based upon, vibrates with important vital conscious character development, discipline and consistency in life. Saturn being a slow moving planet helps people to cultivate patience and helps foster the lesson that all things of value in life take both time and hard work to cultivate.  By being bestowed with the blessings of Saturn’s energy emphasizing all these characteristics people can then become completely successful in all aspects of life.  Saturn is considered one of the most easily approachable and powerful teachers of righteousness and ‘dharmic’ living, granting tremendous success to individuals who follow their proper life path. Similarly, Saturn is also considered extremely malefic to people living an ‘adharmic’ or evil life.

Other deities in the New York temple include Anandha Ganapathy, Shiva Kalyana Anjeneyar (Hanuman), Mata Kanikaparameswari and all Utsava Devatas like  Radha Krishna, Ram Parivar, Lakshmi Narashima, Shakthi Parivar and Navagraha Devatas.

The temple has also formed collaborations with several city-based organizations to offer a variety of educational opportunities for the community, including: Vedic studies, classical Indian dance and music lessons, language classes in Sanskrit and Tamil, yoga and a variety of other and spirituality related offerings.  The temple is currently allowing sponsorship opportunities to support the temple as it grows in fulfilling its mission.  The temple banquet hall is also available for rentals by the community members for various community and family activities.
