Mohammed Iqbal Ahmed Sharief, 86, Passes Away

LINCOLNWOOD, Ill.

Mohammed Iqbal Ahmed Sharief, father of well-known community leader Iftekhar Shareef and Ashfaq Shareef died Jan. 30 morning in Arlington Heights hospital. He was suffering internal head injury from his fall down the stairs Aug. 23, 2014, here at the Iftekhar Shareef residence.

Sharief leaves behind his wife, two sons, five daughters, 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Settled in and around Chicago for over 30 years, the closely knit family migrated from Shamshabad, Hyderabad, India. Born in August 1928, Sharief worked for Indian railways as a commercial superintendent and retired in 1987. He hails from a military family tracing its history to Bijapur, South India. His ancestors were recruited by emperor Quli Khutub Shah to capture Golconda Quila in Hyderabad in 1730 C.E. The family had been living in Shamshabad since then for over 275 years. The migration to Chicago began slowly from 1982.

Braving brutal weather conditions, family, friends and well-wishers thronged the cemetery for burial services Feb. 01. Among the mourners were Consul General of India Ausaf Sayeed, media representatives, seniors such as Hasan Chisti and Masood Shah Khan, members of FIA-Chicago and American Telugu Association and many other familiar faces. Minhaj Akhtar coordinated the prayer services, where dua’s were performed by renowned moulana Janab Badruddin Quadri Sahab.
