A Virginia man reported missing last week in the central Mexican state of Morelos has been found dead. The body of 25-year-old Hari Simran Singh Khalsa was discovered Jan. 2 in a wooded area of the rugged mountains that surround the town. He died of multiple skull fractures after a fall, The Washington Post reported.
Khalsa and his wife Ad Purkh Kaur came to Tepoztlan the day after Christmas for a yoga retreat. The couple, who operates a yoga studio in Northern Virginia, was spending the run-up to New Year’s Day at a yoga and music retreat about an hour south of Mexico City.
On the retreat’s second day, the Brooklyn, New York-born Khalsa yearned to be alone. On Dec. 30 morning, he grabbed a bottle of water, trail mix and a knife and set out for a hike in the mountains of Tepoztlán. An hour into the trek, he took a photo of himself smiling, pointing at the yoga retreat in the distance. “Looking down on you!” he texted his wife, The Washington Post reported.
“I just can’t believe it’s true. Even though I hiked the short but treacherous hike up to where Hari Simran Singh Khalsa[’s] body was found,” ,” Kaur wrote on her Facebook page Jan. 3. “We were so tired it was very slow going. I thought of turning back but really felt I needed to see where he was.”
Hari Simran Singh Khalsa’s mother, Gurusurya Kaur Khasa told the New York Post that her son loved not just mountains, but high places and looking out. She admitted that although her son “did occasionally get lost” on outings, “he was confident and experienced and he wasn’t fearful. . . He loved being in the wilderness and wasn’t intimidated.” She said her son and his wife planned to move to Park Slope, where they would move in with his parents and teach at their yoga studio, Kundalini Yoga.
