South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley’s November visit to India generated numerous business opportunities for her state, according to a top senior official in her administration. A second visit by a high-powered delegation is expected later this year to realize some of those opportunities.
According to a Jan. 2 Associated Press report, South Carolina Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt said 15 potential projects are in the pipeline as a result of the visit but that they will take several months to realize.
Hitt also said his deparment was planning a follow-up visit in November. Haley’s visit, which accoding to Associated Press, cosg $51,500, is being scrutinized closely by media and political opponents both within and outside the Republican Party. Haley last visited India as a toddler and was born and brought up in South Carolina.
Hitt told media at a press briefing that the delegation that accompanied Haley held 120, up from the original 90 planned. The Governor personally attended 52.
It was the heavy publicity about the 10-day November trade mission that increased the scheduled number of meetings, a Jan. 2 report in The State newspaper said. “It snowballed once we got there,” Hitt is quoted saying.
The 18-member delegation included government officials from multiple agencies as well as members of local economic development councils, representatives from 7 private businesses, who accompanied Haley and her husband Michael.
