After dating for six years, “Slumdog Millionaire” co-stars Freida Pinto and Dev Patel, have split. The two met on set of the Oscar-winning movie in 2008.
“Dev and Freida have broken up,” a source told Us magazine, adding that the two have “been done for a while.” Pinto, who is six years older than Patel, recently celebrated her 30th birthday without the actor this past October.
The British actor was noticeably absent, and in an interview earlier this year, she remained tight-lipped about her romance with the star.
In an interview for the June issue of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, Pinto was forthcoming about many things, but managed to remain coy about her boyfriend, simply saying that she has become adept at protecting herself in the public eye.
She instead celebrated her milestone birthday with Siddharth Mallya, son of UB Group Chairman Vijay Mallya. “Freida is single and happy,” another source told the magazine. “Friends are setting her up.”
During happier times, the two considered themselves “soul mates” — in Patel’s case, even before they were dating. “We’re soul mates because we’re both in this surreal situation. She is very beautiful… I haven’t got a girlfriend but Freida, my costar, is gorgeous,” Patel, 24, told Contact Music in 2008.
Years later, during a chat with Interview magazine, Pinto agreed: “I guess he was right in a way; we are soul mates.” Speaking to Times on India, following the success of her debut film, Pinto said, “I think we created all the magic that was needed for one film. We’re leaving the rest of the magic for our personal lives.”
Prior to dating Patel, Pinto was engaged to her former publicist Rohan Antao until January 2009. The two were in a relationship since 2003, and were reportedly engaged to be married in 2007. In an interview with U.K.’s Daily Mail, Antao said there relationship took a backseat once Pinto starred in “Slumdog Millionaire. “She ended it with me after getting close to Dev Patel,” he told the paper.
