Dev Patel will be seen with Nicole Kidman in “Lion,” drama based on Saroo Brierley’s memoirs, which follows an Indian street kid adopted by Australian parents. Based on Brierley’s “A Long Way Home,” the film follows a street kid from Calcutta (Patel) who is taken in and adopted by a couple in Australia. Garth Davis, who co-directed the Golden Globe-winning mini-series “Top of the Lake” with Jane Campion, is attached to helm “Lion,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Luke Davies, the screenwriter on Anton Corbijn’s upcoming “Life,” adapted the book for the screen.
Patel, who made his debut with the Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire,” has several releases lined up for next year. The trailer for his upcoming film “Chappie” was release Nov. 4. A childlike robot is the eponymous hero of South African director Neill Blomkamp’s latest film which will release on March 6. The film also stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and South African rap duo Die Antwoord. The trailer portrays Chappie as a curious, artificially intelligent robot pursued by a villainous Jackman, The Hollywood Reporter said.
Patel will also be seen as the self-taught Indian math genius Srinivasa Ramanujan in Matt Brown’s period drama “The Man Who Knew Infinity” and Lionsgate’s Soviet-era thriller “Child 44.” He will also be seen in John Madden’s upcoming “The Second Best Marigold Hotel,” the sequel to the 2011 film, which will release next year.
