Indo American Fair Attracts Big Crowds, Bollywood Greats

Thousands of visitors made their way to Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey, over the Sept. 3-4 weekend to enjoy performances by top Bollywood singers and actors, and savor Indian culture and cuisine.

Local elected officials joined them and to interact with the Indian-American and South Asian community in this election year, and celebrate the 14th year of the festival. State Sen. Linda Greenstein, state Assemblyman Daniel Benson, Mercer County Surrogate Judge Diane Gerofsky, Mercer County Freeholders Lucy Walter and Andrew Koontz, as well as the Plainsboro Mayor Peter Canto and Deputy Mayor Neil Lewis were among the attendees, a press release from organizers said.

Bappi Lahiri, music director and singer, performed with a live band Sept. 3, getting the audience to its feet with popular numbers like ‘Ooh La La’ and television and feature film actress Tanishaa Mukerji, took the stage Sept. 4 held a talk show with the large gathering. Other performances on stage included traditiona dances like Odissi, Bharatnatyam and Kathak, as well and Bollywood dances, a dance competition with live performances by Sa Re Ga Ma Pa singers, and a special segment for kids. A live DJ and local artists from the South Asian community were able to showcase their talent. Several leading dance schools of New Jersey took part in dance performances and competition.

Vendors sold Indian clothing and jewelry, and major banks, insurance companies and other vendors participated. “The Fair aimed at promoting understanding and appreciation of India’s rich culture, craft and culinary arts,” according to organizers.
