Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made a high pitch for American investment in his state, which he touted “an ideal destination” for projects in areas, including aerospace, defense and automobiles, during his 5-day visit to Big Apple to woo captains of industries ahead of a global investors’ summit in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in October.
The main focus of his visit was a roundtable Aug. 30 with industry leaders. The event was organized jointly by U.S.-India Business Council and the Confederation of Indian Industries, in New York in which he urged prospective investors to make state their investment destination thanks to its competitive edge in comparison to other states and its major regulatory reform, including “single table” clearance of projects.
Among those attending the conference included Mukesh Aghi, president of USIBC, Consul General of India in New York, Riva Ganguly Das and a host of business leaders representing a gamut of industries.
“With agricultural production at 20 percent per annum, industrial growth at 8 percent per annum, 24/7 electricity as well as the largest solar energy generator in Asia, Madhya Pradesh is a dynamic state with burgeoning opportunities across all sectors for investors,” Chouhan said.
Aghi noted that the central location of the state, skilled manpower, robust industries spanning every sector of the economy makes it an ideal destination for investment.
He said that recent measures by the state government to improve its ease of doing business by fast-tracking decision-making processes, ratification of the GST Bill, numerous smart city projects, innovative solar energy projects are indicative of an entrepreneurial mindset, and are likely to reap economic benefits for the state.
“We are hopeful that the Madhya Pradesh Global Investor Summit in October will see participation from American investors,” Aghi added.

The event was attended by companies and senior leaders, including from MasterCard, Pfizer, Xylem, John Deere, Herbalife, Vanguard, and Skypower.
Chouhan was also hosted by the Indian consulate at a community reception in New York Aug. 30, attended by Dr. Sudhir Parikh, publisher of News India Times and Padma Shri award winner, TV Asia chairman H R Shah and members of community, especially from Madhya Pradesh, including Jitendra Muchhal from the ‘Friends of Madhya Pradesh.’
Earlier on Aug. 28, Chouhan was feted at a ‘meet-and-greet’ event organized by the Overseas Friends of BJP at the Royal Albert’s Palace in New Jersey. Anand Jain, N.J. co-convener of OFBJP, welcomed the audience and the chief guest. After the traditional lighting of the lamp and rendition of United States and Indian national anthems, Krishna Reddy, OFBJP president described various activities of OFBJP in New Jersey. Chouhan in his address said that he was happy to be amongst the NRI’s and humbled by their love for India.
Chouhan officially launched the OFBJP monthly newsletter, published by the OFBJP external communications team. The newsletter would carry articles, news, and analysis about the achievements of Modi and other BJP state governments and local OFBJP activities.
Besides Chouhan, present at the event was Rajendra Shukla, minister of industries, Madhya Pradesh government.
The chief minister took time off from his packed schedule to pay and “emotional visit” to the 9/11 memorial and museum near World Trade Center Aug. 31. “Most unthinkable inhuman act of violence perpetrated by terrorists in modern history, walking thru the @Sept 11Memorial was heart wrenching,” he tweeted to describe the visit.
“(I) salute men andwomen who sacrificed their lives saving others on the line of duty on 9/11, fills my heart with great pride for selfless acts,” he added on his official Twitter handle.
