Virbhadra “Viru” Patel, a community leader from Woodbridge, New Jersey, was last week appointed to the township council after longtime member James Major, representing the 4th Ward resigned to take a new job.

According to news reports, the council voted August 9 to appoint Patel to fill the 4th Ward council vacancy.

Mycentraljersey.com reported quoting Township Clerk John Mitch that Patel will serve on the council until the Nov. 8 general election. At that time, voters will decide who will fill the vacancy and serve the remaining unexpired term until Dec. 31, 2017.

The reports said that Patel, who is very active in Woodbridge’s thriving Indian-American business community, will be the first member of the community to serve on the council. He was to be sworn in August 14 following the India Day Parade on Oak Tree Road.

According to his LinkedIn profile page, Patel, who went to M.S. University, Baroda, has a B.S. in civil engineering and M.S. in transportation and traffic planning and engineering, from N.J.I.T and works as a consultant.
