United Cricket League Championship In Illinois Generates Huge Interest

The United Cricket League (UCL) led by founder Adil Azeem Khan held its first night Championship tournament at Dee Park in Des Plaines Il on August 5 2016. More than 100 people turned out to watch the tournament between 2 local teams the Dominators and Anjuman with a winning prize of $2500.

Special guests attending the tournament included the Consulate General of Pakistan, Faisal Tirmizi; 2nd Ward Alderman of Des Plaines, John Robinson, and Syed Hussaini VP from Wintrust Community Bank.

A total of 12 teams competed in the tournament and teams Anjuman and Dominators succeeded to the finals by completing in a total of 3 matches. Pakistani international test cricketer, Zulqarnain Haider who had 55 runs, joined the Dominators team.

The Anjuman team first innings score was 96 all out and the Dominators chased it in 15 overs with the loss of 1 wicket. At the end of the 2020 match Dominators won.

Team captain of Dominators Sohail Patel accepted the $2500 check winning prize for first place, Captain of Anjuman Ayaz Patel accepted the $1000 check for runner up, Man of Series went to Zulqarnian Haider and Man of the Match went to Sadi Ahmed Patel from the Dominators team.

The UCL teams 90% volunteer based however the caliber of players continues to increase year by year the league has attracted well known players from Pakistan, West Indies and India while also promoting Cricket right here at home within the Chicago public schools and Niles West High School in Skokie, Il.

According to Khan, the future for cricket seems promising “ In the next few years, I would like to get IPL India involved, we have been very successful at getting high caliber players and we are one of the first tournaments with 5 international players, For next year we are trying to expand the Skokie area, and Schaumburg and will also be offering free training,” said Khan.
Alderman Johnson who also attended the tournament said, “This my first cricket match and I really enjoyed it, I love the enthusiasm and hospitality, I will back again to watch other matches.”

The Consulate General of Pakistan also talked about the importance of cricket as an uniting factor across world cultures stating, “

The region that we come from cricket is a more of passion and religion it is one thing that brings all the people from different parts of world together and I’ve always believed our youth from South Asia living in Chicago and Midwest they have to get involved in sports and this one sport that brings people together. Adding, “It was a great tournament and turn out. I was very happy to meet some former test players from Pakistan. Definitely sports are something the consulate and I personally think is very important to promote.”
