About 200 guests attended the Tenth Gala & Awards Nite of the Connecticut chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin last month, recognizing people for their contributions to the community in various ways and offering scholarships for college students.
“We are celebrating the achievements of five distinguished individuals and the award is a reflection of their remarkable accomplishments and commendable services,” said Shelly Nichani, president of GOPIO-CT referring to the five people recognized at the event.
Those honored included David Smith of Stamford Hospital as the recipient of the Friend of GOPIO and the Indian-American community award; Sachin Lawande, a Westport resident and president and CEO of Visteon Corporation for his achievement as a corporate leader; Anjali Sharma, a Greenwich resident, for community service and promoting philanthropy; Anna Duleep, a former Norwalk Councilwoman, for her contributions and achievements in political involvement, and Roopa Modha of Shelton for promoting women’s issues using her legal expertise.
Thomas Abraham, founder president of GOPIO International, while introducing Smith, noted that it was for the first time that GOPIO-CT recognized an employee of an institution. Smith, he said, has worked in the health care sector for over 35 years and is an ardent supporter of good health and healthy food habits and has supported the Indian-American community for many years.
Proclamations to the awardees by Dannel Patrick Malloy, gov. of Connecticut, and Stamford Mayor David Martin, were read out at the awards ceremony. “You are the community. You are not part of the community,” Martin told the Indian-Americans at the June 18 event.
For the second year in a row, GOPIO-CT Scholarship for College Tuitions were given to Gunja Shah, a prospective student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy; Tanusri Balla, entering University of Pennsylvania; Nikita Jaaswal, who has enrolled to begin her studies at University of California and Sirin Vahora, a mother of two studying nursing in Norwalk Community College.
