On June 25, 2016, Hundreds of people from different ethnicities and backgrounds gathered at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark for one of the largest meditation events in the United States – the East Coast Heartfulness Conference Jun 25.
The highlight of the conference was a practical meditation exercise demonstration led by Kamlesh D. Patel and followed by the participants who lovingly address him as lovingly called Daaji.
The organizers said about 2,000 people attended the conference which was the third in a nationwide series that brought Heartfulness meditation to thousands across the U.S. The conference had earlier been held in Detroit and Los Angeles.
The session in New Jersey provided participants an opportunity to understand and experience the ‘Heartfulness’ technique and incorporate meditation in their daily lives. The participants were also made aware of a wide range of support and resources that include trainers, online materials, meditation centers and a mobile app for remote meditation sessions with trainers.
Hundreds of people lined up for hours in advance to attend the event that was opened by award-winning folk singer Honor Finnegan with a heartwarming performance.
Partha Nandi, the creator and host of the “Ask Dr. Nandi” television show was the MC for the event. .Nandi engaged the audience with his witty insights and anecdotes.
Complimenting Nandi was the presence of Gabrielle Bernstein, the New York Times bestselling author of “May Cause Miracles.” She shared her personal journey towards meditation as a life practice.
Local community leaders and officials, including New Jersey lawmaker Raj Mukherji and former N.J. Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula attended the event. The Rev. Louise Scott-Rountree presented a letter on behalf of Ras Baraka, mayor of Newark, welcoming the Heartfulness Institute Newark and honoring its initiatives.
