Chhaya CDC and community partners joined hands to express solidarity against hate crimes at an event dubbed United Against Hate at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights, Queens, June 25.
With the help of the Queens Museum and DoT, ‘An Evening of Rights and Reflections’ was organized as a response to the heightened political rhetoric and hate crimes against the Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities as well as other marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ community.
The event brought together community members, artists, and activists as they shared their experiences with discrimination through personal reflections, and by participating in an art project that promoted solidarity in the face of discrimination. It also featured reading poetry and “spoken word performances” by Chhaya’s Jagpreet Singh, Navpreet “Nav” Singh, and Sham-E- Ali. Chhaya and United Sikhs, a nonprofit serving the South Asian community in New York City, conducted a joint “Know Your Rights” workshop that informed participants of their rights as citizens and how to address racial and religious discrimination in the city.
Community partners, including United Sikhs and Adhikar were on-site to connect people to resources, including legal aid representation and counseling services. Keynote speaker, Deepa Iyer, author of the highly acclaimed ‘We Too Sing America’, concluded the program with a discussion on combating religious and racial discrimination.
