A 13-year-old girl from Connecticut was named the 2016 grand prize winner of ‘Succeeding Together’ national essay contest that has been created by Wells Fargo to celebrate the huge impact The First Tee, a youth development organization through golf, has on students across the country.
The written contest was held ahead of the 2016 Wells Fargo Golf Championship held last week in Charlotte, North Carolina, to which the grand prize winner, Meghna Mazumdar, won a trip.
The competition was specifically created for the 30,000+ teenage participants of The First Tee that introduces young people to golf and its inherent values at approximately 170 chapters across the U.S.
The ‘Succeeding Together’ written contest asked participants to write about the importance of having and being a part of a “Go-To Team,” a core life skill of The First Tee that fosters partnership and teamwork in all areas of life.
While Mazumdar from The First Tee of Connecticut was named the grand prize winner, Arthi Chandra, 14, from The First Tee of Silicon Valley, Derrick Ow, 18, from The First Tee of Monterey County, also from California, and Janane Tan, 16, from The First Tee of Greater Dallas, were named the first prize winners, the financial services company announced last month.
Wells Fargo says that with one in five students dropping out of public high schools, the need for quality youth programs is critical. Thus, The First Tee golf program can be part of the solution to challenges facing today’s youth.
“The First Tee reaches young people aged 5-18 through golf instruction and life skills lessons administered at chapters, military installations, and to students in elementary schools,” the company said in a press release.
To a question as to why working with a “Go-To Team” important for her, Mazumdar said that while bright, mature, thoughtful and resourceful are some characteristics that describe her, even on her best day, she cannot possibly solve all the problems she is faced with.
“A Go-To Team’ gives me a feeling of security, support and the reassurance that I am not alone. Having that team makes me feel like I am a part of something bigger (and more powerful) than myself. The collective brainpower, energy and spirit of that group help empower me to be a better me. That is the importance of having a Go-To Team!,” she said.
All the four contest winners received a four-day/three- night trip for two to Charlotte last week to attend the 2016 Wells Fargo Championship and experience the excitement of a PGA Tour event from inside the ropes. Mazumdar, as the grand prize winner, played in the tournament’s Pro-Am with a PGA Tour golfer May 3.
Last year, Wells Fargo deepened its relationship with The First Tee by becoming a national trustee and further supporting the organization, its participants and volunteers.
