A 63-year-old man killed his wife he was married to “for decades” with a single gunshot in Linear Park, San Jose, April 30 on suspicion that his wife Sonia Nallan was having an extramarital affair.

James Nallan, who bought a handgun to shoot his wife in their home on the night of April 30, was arrested and charged with the alleged crime, police said.

According to a San Jose Mercury News report May 4, the husband reported the shooting around 1 a.m. and said he would wait outside the home for police officials to come. Police  found Sonia Nallan with head injury inside the home and took her to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“James admitted that he felt she was having an affair and confronted her when she returned home that evening,” San Jose police Sgt. Patrick Guire was quoted as saying. “During the confrontation he shot her once the head with the purchased firearm.”

Nallan’s brother Chris Nallan, a pastor at the San Jose International Christian Center. said although he did not know of any discord in their relation, James Nallan was never quite the same person after suffering a serious head injury in a fall about seven years ago. He was not working anymore following the fall and that “his emotions were up and down.” Described by Chris as fun-loving and engaging person before the accident, Chris said his brother had become withdrawn.

Chris Nallan told police that the couple, who have two college-going children, had a “wonderful relationship”, a report in East Bay Times said.

The homicide is the 17th in San Jose this year.
