Spices of Liberty’, a full-length feature film by Indian-American director Gowri Goli, is a love story of a young couple of Indian descent born in America and the challenges they face in their long-distance relationship.
In his debut feature film director Goli builds some kind of suspense about whether the hero and the heroine, played by Ajay Kathurvar and Suhasini Reballa respectively, can find a way to truly get to know each other despite their romantic relationship and the circumstances – the challenges of time, distance and jealousy.
The 110-minute movie relates the Indian Scriptures with American life and philosophy of ‘Freedom and Equality’ through the hero and heroine and people around them.
“The movie shows how the young generation in the U.S. is integrating the wisdom they have learned from their parents to enjoying the ‘Liberty’ they have in this country,’” Goli said in response to a question.
“Liberty” means, he explained, “responsibility and how the Indian-American youth enjoys that liberty with total understanding of the responsibilities associated with it.
The movie shot at various locations in North Carolina, including in Raleigh, Morrisville and Kitti Hawk, is expected to open in theaters soon.
Goli, an IT consultant who has been part of about a dozen short films as a cinematographer earlier, said this was his first venture as director of a full-length movie. “I am one of the fortunate ones to have access to ocean of wisdom of various spiritual leaders from India due to my earlier role as a video journalist for TV ASIA. Since last several years I was compiling thoughts and ideas and looking for an opportunity to convert those into a meaningful format to share with the world. Thanks to circumstances, which have created a set of like-minded people, I was able to create ‘Spices of Liberty’,” Goli, who lives in North Carolina, said.
“After seeing the second cut, my heart was filled with ‘fulfillment’. We were able to translate the thoughts in our minds into a beautiful love story which will appeal to everyone youth, parents and kids equally.
