Police tore up cement at a Bronx house and searched with sniffer dogs March 6 to find clues about the mysterious disappearance of a Bangladeshi nurse.
According to a Daily News report, police were called to the woman’s E. 198th St. house in Bedford Park , after her employer reported her missing in December. Mahfuza Rahman, 30, was last seen leaving Bellevue Dec. 8. The search for the missing nurse was delayed for three months because her husband Mohammad Chowdhury, told Rahman’s Bellevue colleagues that she had a family emergency and needed to take time off from work.
The husband told the police that his wife had returned to Bangladesh because her parents were ill. But police grew suspicious when they later found out that her husband left the U.S. with the couple’s young daughter, Daily News said quoting police sources. “They have no independent information that she was killed. But the fact that he absconded without telling anyone has made us suspicious,” a police source said.
Neighbors said that police showed up at the address March four, and brought in an NYPD canine unit March 6. “The police got suspicious when they noticed the husband had left the country with their little girl,” the report quoted next-door neighbor Percio Garcia, 48 as saying.
“Right now, it’s a missing person investigation,” a police official was quoted as telling the Daily News. “We don’t have any evidence of foul play. She could have just left.”
But the paper quoted a police source as saying that there is concern that Rahman was the victim of a crime. The source said investigators found it odd that Rahman never called her employer before leaving for Bangladesh as claimed by her husband.
Rahman studied chemistry at University of Dhaka and then obtained her associate’s degree from LaGuardia Community College in Queens before attending Hunter College to study nursing, the Daily News said. She graduated in January 2014 with a bachelor’s degree.
