Narendra Shah, who brought a revolution in terms of honest presentation of people and events in the Gujarati Media in India, and rose to fame with his maiden publication ‘Nikhalas’, died in New York Dec 15.
The veteran journalist and writer, who had moved from India to the United States some years ago, was 75 and is survived by wife Hasu and daughter Mulauni.
Shah had a dream to cater to Gujarati readers with Nikhalas, a very special weekly news magazine. He wanted to present his viewers with rich interesting articles, editorials and real life events.
NIKHALAS a first four color magazine, when it was first published was an instant success.
Other Gujarati publications were left with no choice but to follow Nikhalas. His second publication was “Nirante” one of the first cross word puzzle magazines for those who loved a challenge. “Nirante” cross word puzzles gave a new meaning to education via puzzles.
Shah was simultaneously busy with another success project. He was the Ddrector, and was responsible for financial and legal departments in Bollywood’s number one film magazine ‘STARDUST’ and social magazine ‘Society’ along with their sister concern Creative Unit, a leading advertising agency. He was instrumental for their success and market share.
Shah was born Sept. 28, 1940 in Rajkot, Gujarat to Mulchandbhai and Vijayaben Sheth. As the oldest of ten brothers and sisters, one thing that all admired about him was how to he took care of the family after his father passed away.
He sacrificed much to provide for them. The hard-working visionary that he was allowed him to excel in the fields allowing him to guide his family through many difficult times, and eventually bringing them to a respectable life in the society.
But his greatest pride was his wife and daughter.
His relations in New York described him as an open-minded person who had the ability to understand someone slse’s thoughts and needs and thus would always help others.
