At least 500 leaders in the field of medicine are expected to gather at the 10th Global Health Summit in New Delhi Jan. 1 to 3, led by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.
Through these summits and other outreach efforts, such as to the World Health Organization, AAPI has developed strategic alliances enabling it to marshal prominent world leaders in medicine to contribute to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” and “digitalization” agenda, Dr. Seema Jain, president of AAPI told News India Times.
At least 20 medical associations including the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from the U.S. and numerous Indian specialty groups, state level organizations, and leading Indian hospitals are among the participants, according to the Global Health Summit website.
On Jan. 2, the first Trauma and Brain Injury Guideline for India will be launched at the GHS. Jain said AAPI is refocusing its mission and vision of GHS 2016 to make a impact on India’s healthcare system by sharing best practices and experiences and developing actionable plans for launching demonstration projects that make affordable and quality healthcare available to all Indians.
“The whole summit’s focus is on giving back to India,” Dr. Jain said. noting that in her September meeting with Prime Minister Modi, he wanted a focus on trauma and brain injury, yoga, depression and digitalization. The GHS 2016 will focus on women’s health and key areas of non-communicable diseases that are extremely important for India, she added. India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and several other high profile women will helm a seminar on women’s health, including mental health, Dr. Jain said.
Numerous workshops will be held including one on head injury, trauma and first responders led by Dr. Krishan Kumar, chief emergency room physician, Nassau County Hospital, New York, according to the GHS website; A seminar on the critical U.S. exam foreign physicians have to take, i.e. ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) is scheduled led by Dr. Ram Krishna, incoming chairman of ECFMG starting Jan. 1. At this workshop, the U.S. team will outline the requirements and methodology of the tests as well as the visa facilitation process for doctors from India. The objectives of the Foundation for Advancement of Medical Education and Research will also be discussed. The fourth “CEO Forum” will be held on the last day of summit, Jan. 3. Most major disease tracks important to India will be covered. Apart from mental health, trauma and emergency medicine, diseases covered at GHS 2016 will include cardiac health, diabetes, oncology, gastro intestinal, maternal and infant mortality, hypertension and stroke, infectious disease and antibiotic resistance, and lung health.
Later this year, AAPI hosts its annual convention June 30 to July 4, at the New York City Marriott Marquis. The 34th Annual Convention & Scientific Assembly, as it is titled, expects as in other years, to attracts physicians and healthcare professionals from across the U.S. who will discuss medical advances, strategies to develop health policy agendas, and encourage participation in legislative priorities in Congress in the coming year.
The convention will also offer 10-12 hours of Continuing Medical Education credits. Scientific presentations, exhibits, and product theater presentations will highlight the newest advances in patient care, medical technology, and practice management issues across multiple medical specialties, “And of course a little bite of the Big Apple to enjoy,” Dr. Rita Ahuja, the convention chair, told News India Times.
While the list of speakers and leaders is being finalized, Dr. Ahuja said, the convention’s attraction is the location at the heart of New York City’s Times Square, and a dynamic team which plans to make it a one-of-a-kind convention. Dr. Ahuja was last involved with organizing the 2000 convention at the same venue. “The cultural diversity we have in Manhattan is rare in any other city,” she said. “Apart from the medical and scientific agenda, we will cater to all aspects of life and family – discussions on politics, yoga sessions, spiritual leaders, and interesting culinary offerings,” she said, noting that Dr. Sudhir Parikh, publisher of News India Times and recipient of India’s Padma Shri award, is the head of the Political Committee for the convention. With an aging population, Dr. Ahuja said, the mixed attendance will include “a lot” of younger physicians and students.
