Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of U.S. Congress and and now Minority Leader in the House expressed strong support for Raja Krishnamoorthi, candidate in the Democratic primary for the 8th Congressional District of Illinois.
Krishnamoorthi, who has tried in the past to get his party’s endorsement, has the best chance to clear that hurdle this time round in the March 15 primary, with a good chance he could win a seat in the U.S. Congress in November 2016 as the district leans Democratic. The non-partisan Cook Political Report rates District 8 as “D+8” meaning it leans 8 points in favor of Democrats. In an April assessment, Cook named Krishnamoorthi as the “frontrunner” for the seat.
In 2011, Pelosi along with the leadership of the Democratic Party, endorsed Krishnamoorthi’s opponent, former Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth, who went on to win the seat to the House of Representatives.
“I strongly endorse Raja Krishnamoorthi because he is a true progressive and the best candidate to represent working families in Chicago’s Northwest suburbs,” Pelosi is quoted saying in a statement. “Raja will bring to Congress a tireless work ethic and deep experience in the public and private sectors,” Pelosi said, adding, “These qualities will enable him to pursue our common goal of fighting for progressive causes and strengthening and growing our middle class.”
“This (endorsement) is a decisive sign of Raja’s continuing momentum. It’s clear he is the best choice for the district,” Justin Lamorte, Krishnamoorthi’s campaign manager told Desi Talk.
In a press release Dec. 15, Krishnammorti said he was thrilled to receive Pelosi’s support and praised her for pushing President Obama’s agenda in the face of a Republican majority in the House. He promised to build on Duckworth’s “strong, progressive record.”
Pelosi is among scores of Democratic leaders and organization who have endorsed him, among them former senior advisor to President Obama David Axelrod and Rep. Jan Schakowsky as well as the Illinois State Council of Machinists, International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 2 and Illinois Letter Carriers President Ken Christy.
Krishnamoorthi, who has a law degree from Harvard, and is a engineering graduate from Princeton University, is currently president of Sivananthan Labs and Episolar, Inc. small businesses that sell products in the national security and renewable energy industries. He is the former vice-chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council, and former Illinois deputy treasurer. He lives in Schaumberg, Illinois, with his wife Priya and two sons.
