Chicago Consulate Celebrates Constitution Day

On Nov. 27 the Consulate General of India in Chicago celebrated the Constitution Day to mark the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly Nov. 26, 1949 which is observe red as “Constitution Day” every year.

The celebration was attended by a cross-section of prominent Indian-Americans residing in Chicagoland.

The program commenced by observing one minute of silence as a homage to the victims of the dastardly terrorist attacks in Mumbai, marking the 7th Anniversary of 26/11 attacks. Opening remarks were delivered Consul General by Ausaf Sayeed.

Sayeed spoke about the mammoth work done by the drafting committee of the constituent assembly under the chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and emphasized that the Constitution of India does not discriminate anyone on the basis of religion, creed, sex or any other ground. “It is the duty of every citizen of India, therefore, to uphold the Constitution both in its letter and spirit,” he said and read out the Preamble of the Constitution of India,” he said.

“This is wonderful way for us to remember our nation’s history as the Constitution of India imparts a great deal of national pride among people,” he said.

During the program, two documentaries, ‘Taana Baana: The Warp and Weft of India’ and ‘India-: The Spirit of Freedom’, highlighting the salient and empowering features of the Constitution were also screened and O.P. Meena, consul, proposed a vote of thanks.
