Thousands Attend Four-Day Navratri Festival In Somerset

A four-day Navratri festival held on two consecutive weeks at Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, New Jersey, late last month, witnessed a boisterous Garba dance and cultural programs electrified by recitals and performances by area musicians and dancers as well as from India.

The four-day-festival on Oct. 9 and 10 and again on Oct. 16 and 17 was organized by veteran community leader and Navratri Raas Garba organizer Pradip (Peter) Kothari of Edison in partnership with Patel Brothers, an Indian-American grocery retailer in the U.S.

An estimated 4,000 people participated in the festival, the majority of who shuffled their feet in dereference to culture and traditions of Gujarat during the Garba and Dandiya dances, a staple of Navratri that started with an auspicious lamp-lighting ceremony on a huge stage.

The inauguration was attended by a host of elected town officials as well s community seniors.

The who’s who were on the stage included New Jersey Congressman Frank Pallone, state assemblymen Joseph Danielsen, Nancy Pinkin, Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey, former Mayor of Franklin Township Bryan Levine, former assemblyman Upendra Chivukula who is now a N.J. Board of Public Unity commissioner and Edison councilman Dr. Sudhanshu Prasad.

The sold-out event was entertained by Mumbai’s musical group Rang Tarang showcased in N.J. by Bunty Entertainment, USA with talented local musicians and dancers giving captivating recitals.
