Gala Held To Fund South Street Seaport Diwali Festival

The Association of Indians in America, New York Chapter, hosted a benefit gala at the Swan Club in Roslyn, Long Island Sept. 27, in support of its 28th Annual Deepavali Festival scheduled for Oct. 4 at South Street Seaport, Manhattan.

Among the individuals honored at the Gala were hotelier and President of Vegetarian Vision, Dr. Chandra Mehta, and Dr. Harish Mistry of Lord Shivas Properties and the Vijaydev Mistry Foundation. In line with the theme of this year “Youth Empowerment”, Dr. Mukul Arya, director of Advanced Endoscopy at the New York Methodist Hospital was recognized.

Special recognition and appreciation was given to mountaineer Arunima Sinha, recipient of India’s Padma Shri award. Sinha is the first female amputee who accomplished the feat of climbing Mount Everest. She gave an inspirational speech of her journey was the highlight of the evening.

The evening comprised of cocktails, musical entertainment by Sudhir Khunti & Group, and dance performance by Adelphi University’s Sapna, of the highly successful inter-collegiate dance competition, Naach Inferno. Naach Inferno returns to the stage during the AIA’s Deepavali celebrations when college and university teams from around the Tri-State area will showcase fusion dances.

Presented by Star Plus, the competition will be telecast globally. Members of KBI (formerly known as NYU Khalbali) performed at the benefit gala and will also be performing on the Deepavali stage Oct. 4.
