The sixth annual Chicago South Asian Film Festival, one of the largest multicultural film events in the Midwest, will kick off Sept. 30 with a number of award-winning films screened during the six-day event that will feature award-winning movies of some of the best Indian directors as well actress Sharmila Tagore.
Sponsored by Zee Cinema, the fest will run through Sept. 30-Oct. 5 at the Icon Showplace Theater in Roosevelt Square. This year’s schedule includes film-screening and question and answer session with Avinash Arun, director of Killa which revolves around an 11-year-old child who has a difficult time coping with the death of his father.
The film was selected for the 64th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Crystal Bear by the Children’s Jury in the Generations KPlus section.
The other films to be featured include Titli, Margarita with a Straw, directed by Shonali Bose, Nachom-ia Kumpasar (Let’s Dance to the Rhythm, Dhanak, Labor of Love, Duktar (Daughter), Hunterr, and Haramkhor, a film by award winning actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
This year’s CSAFF gala will take place Oct. four and CSAFF will present a lifetime achievement award to veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, and feature the premiere of the play “Me, My Mom & Sharmila” by Chicago-based director Fawzia Mirza.
The closing night film will screen Satyajit Ray’s Devi, which will conclude with at Q&A session with Sharmila Tagore at the Art Institute of Chicago Oct. 5.
The Chicago South Asian Film Festival was founded in 2010 with the support Vachikam and the Network of Indian Professionals. The festival since its founding has showcased more than 300 films.
Last year’s festival featured a line-up of top producers, directors and actors, including Rajaat Kapor, director and Manish Mundra, producer from the film Ankoh Dekhi.
