Two officers from the Edison, New Jersey Fire Department joined members of the city’s Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh chapter Sept. 6, to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, the Hindu festival that recognizes the duty of brothers and sisters to protect each other.
The event was held at the Nrithya Madhavi Dance Studio in South Plainfield, N.J. where the Bhagwa Dhwaj, the Hindu flag, was raised, according to a press release from organizers. Volunteers did some yoga, meditation and played few games with those attending.
Acting Captain Tim Eosso and Doug McMahon, representing the Edison Fire Department were the chief guests for the program. The importance of the festival was explained by organizers as akin to Universal Brotherhood Day, celebrated for centuries within Hindu culture and relevant to society today.
Children from HSS tied the Rakhi on the wrists of Eosso and McMahon, and on each other, taking a vow to protect each other in time of need and also protect the society.
Gaurav Singhal, joint secretary, HSS, NJ, elaborated the historical relevance of the festival and called on everyone, especially children to become strong both physically and intellectually to be in a position to help each other and the society.
“With 9/11 (Patriot Day) just a week away, we all should remember how hundreds of fire fighters, policemen who have died trying to protect their fellow human beings,” organizers said in the press release.
Eosso and McMahon said firefighters take similar vows when they join the force, adding that it was good to know that Hindu religion teaches this societal obligation, according to organizers. They went over some fire safety tips with the kids and adults during the event.
