Thousands cheered and applauded as a 40-feet Ravan effigy burst into flames to celebrate the victory of good over evil, followed by a spectacular display of fireworks.
South Street Seaport was packed with more than 3,000 people from the tri-state area to attend the first Dushahra Festival in New York on Sept. 21.
The event included a dazzling Ram Leela presented by 75 artists of Navrang Dance Academy, according to a press release issued by the organizers.
The artists brought to life the ancient Indian epic “Ramayana” as the crowd watched with rapt attention. Beautiful costumes and props were imported from India just for this day.
The festival was inaugurated by Counsel General of India in New York Dnayaneshwar Mulay along with Indo-American Festival Chairperson Chanchal Gupta and President Raj Mittal, the press release said.
The festival had something for everyone – a four-hour long cultural program with dance and music performances by over 100 artists, ethnic Indian food, a crafts bazaar, mehendi and rides for children.
A similar festival will be held on Oct. 4 at Lake Papaianni Park in Edison, New Jersey.
