Kshma Sawant, Seattle City Councilor from the Socialist Alternative Party, made a passionate appeal for public ownership of big oil and other fossil fuel companies in a bid to reverse climate change. Speaking at a meeting attended by close to 2,000 people in New York City, most of them from the left, Sawant lashed out at President Obama’s environmental policies claiming that the expansion of fossil fuel exploitation had been the greatest under his watch than ever before.
The Sept. 20 gathering entitled Talk Before the Walk, was held at the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Manhattan. Held on the eve of the Sept. 21 Climate Change Walk where an estimated 400,000 people protested policies on the streets of Manhattan on the eve of an international climate change conference to be attended by world leaders including President Obama.
Sawant called for massive public projects that would provide widespread employment; and especially the building of mass transit systems.
“Those controlling the Climate Change conference are in the pockets of the fossil fuel companies,” Sawant asserted. “The leadership of both political parties is in their back pockets,” she added.
To address the climate crisis we must be able to democratically and nationally” decide how the resources controlled by oligarchs, Sawant said, “How else than by bringing these great corporations into public ownership,” to massive applause. “You cannot control what you do not own,” she added.
She also appealed to Congressman Bernie Sanders, Independent from Vermont, to stand as a 3rd party candidate, in 2016.
