NEWARK, NJ—A Newark federal court judge sentenced a Mauritius man of Indian origin to 13 months in prison Aug. 5, for sexually abusing a sleeping woman aboard a cruise ship last year.
Karan Seechurn, 26, was detained when the ship docked at Bayonne, N.J. After his arrest, Seechurn pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact before U.S. District Judge Esther Salas, the judge who sent him to prison Aug. 5.
According to news reports, Seechurn was an employee of Royal Caribban cruises. Court documents filed in this case show he was responsible for restocking the minibars in passengers’ rooms and had a key to access the rooms.
Seechurn admitted that on Dec. 23, while he was off-duty, he entered a passenger’s room, found a woman asleep and proceeded to touch her private parts while she was asleep.
News reports at that time quoted authorities saying Seechurn threatened the woman he would burn down the ship if she reported him. In addition to the prison term, Judge Salas sentenced Seechurn to one year of supervised release.
