In Death As In Life Former President Kalam Unites Indian-Americans

When he came to New York in 2007 as many as 34 Indian-American organizations from the Tri-state area burying their differences joined hands to welcome former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

In death as in life Kalam seems to have helped keep that tradition alive – uniting Indian Americans.

In the wake of his death last month mourned by the Indian-Americans in the United States, members of the community representing more than 30 organizations from almost every state of India came together to pay tributes to the People’s President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at a program organized over the weekend by Lead India 2020 Foundation (USA) in Edison, New Jersey.

“Dr. Kalam has inspired every Indian across the nation cutting across regions, age groups, religions, social groups and even knowledge levels,” said Hari Eppanapally, Chairman of the Lead India 2020 addressing the gathering.

“Dr. Kalam has inspired the common man of India and at the same time, he inspired political leaders, intellectuals, and eminent scientists as well,” he said.
“We are really fortunate to have Dr. Kalam as the chief mentor of the Lead India 2020 Foundation that aims to transform millions of school children across India,” said Srinivas Ganagoni, president of the Lead India 2020 Foundation (USA). He also emphasized the importance of carrying on Kalam’s values, most importantly foster the youth abroad and back home, as well as remaining focused on the mission at hand – the future of India.

Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Rajmohan Gandhi who was present at the August two event at TV Asia Auditorium, paid tributes in a few words.

“I know you love India, I know you support India, but please make sure you also get to know India,” Gandhi said.

Lines of Kalam’s admirers formed to praise and speak about Kalam. People who paid tributes included Commissioner of N.J. Upendra Chivukula and TV Asia chairman H.R. Shah, and community activist Peter Kothari,

The organization’s secretary Rajesh Gooty thanked the every Indian Association that supported the program, and the media partners including TV Asia, News India and Desi Talk.
