Hundreds of Indian Americans gathered in front of Jersey City temples of different denominations July 16, as the annual Rath Yatra festival was celebrated by devout Hindus joined by some people from other communities in and around Indian Square in Hudson County’s principal city where it took place. This was the third year that the procession was held and it lasted for five hours.
Among those who joined the Rath Yatra were councilmen Daniel Rivera and Khemraj “Chico” Ramchal.
The procession started from the Satyanarayan Temple on J.F. Kennedy Boulevard towards Newark Avenue; the busiest Indian market square, and then moved on for about for five hours.
As the chariot, carrying the figures of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balaram and sister Subhadra, made its way pulled along by volunteers, devotees scrambled to get a chance to touch it, considered one of the most virtuous religious deeds.
Indian business association leaders, including Suresh Patel (Mukhi), Jashabhai Patel and many other Indian business owners on the square welcomed the devotees and offered prasad. Priests Shastriji Pandit Upenrakumar Mehta and Parul Mehta conducted and coordinated the procession.
