The Indo-American Christian Children of Chicago and North America celebrated its 15th anniversary basketball tournament with a record 60 players aged between 12 and 25 from six teams participating in the game from different parts of Illinois.
Players showed fierce competitive spirit and individual skills during a series of games July 18 at Willow Recreation Center basketball gymnasium, Hoffman Estates Park District, Illinois. More than 250 spectators packed the center.
In the finals Knights from Naperville played against New World Order from Chicago. Although both teams displayed great basketball skills earning kudos from spectators for their fast dribbling and accurate shooting, Knights won the championship with a final score of 59:39 bagging the trophy.
Regi Paul, founder of the Indo-American Christian Youth Basketball Tournament, said the initiative was designed to reduce teen obesity, prevent juvenile diabetes and promote friendship, unity, harmony and mutual respect among all the youth of Indo-American community across North America. Paul attempts to motivate youth to serve the poor and to prevent a digital divide among poor and rich children. After 14 years of obstacles, for the first time the youth successfully organized the tournament for themselves and by themselves and met the goals of the organization, Paul said. Ernest Mall, CEO of EmpoweredPoor.com gave a message on “Changing Lives and Building Legacies.”
Katherine Thorat, an Air India Official, inaugurated the championship and cut the ribbon opening the games. Thorat also recognized David Nagelli and awarded a special medal for his contributions to the tournament.
Varghese Chacko released a special souvenir to mark the occasion.
Indian Christian Community Senior leaders John Ravinder Sangha and Prabhu Latha Sangha presented the championship trophy to Knights’ captain Jason Thakor.The Most Valuable Player Trophy was awarded by Pravin Charles to Isaac Pereira of the Chicago Knights Team.
