The American Muslim Council held its 2015 Annual Interfaith Ramadan Dinner July 9, bringing together more than 1,000 people from different religious communities across New Jersey to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan with Muslim leaders at Royal Albert’s Palace, Fords, New Jersey.
At the 4th annual Iftar party, AMC Political Action Committee founder and chairman Sam Khan said the purpose of Iftar was to break bread with Christian, Jewish, and Hindu faiths and to share values of community service in a diverse society that exists in the U.S.
The organization honored several people including Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey and state Senator Samuel Thomson for their commitment to the South Asian community in New Jersey.
Several clergy, local and state politicians including Old Bridge, N.J. Mayor Henry Owen, Somerset Mayor Biran Levine, State Senator Linda Greenstien, lawmakers John S. Wisniewski and Jamal Holley; Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin, County Clerk Elaine Flynn, County Sheriff Scot Mildred, Raja Ali Ejaz, consul general of Pakistan, New York; Chairman of Overseas Pakistanis Capt. Shaheen, Assemblyman Pat Diegnan, County Freeholder James Polos, Rev. Kenneth J. Macari of Community Presbyterian Church, Jewish community leader Walter Ruby, Hindu priest Prachi Makkar, Sikh priest Gyani Harinder Singh of Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar, Carteret, N.J., Imam Rauf, Councilman from Plainsboro Dr. Nuran Nabi, publisher of Desi Talk and recipient of India’s Padma Shri award Dr. Sudhir Parikh and many others joined the interfaith Iftar, a release from the organization said. Several other notable religious and secular leaders received awards.
