Internationally acclaimed actor Anupam Kher held a news conference here at the Holiday Inn, June 17, to promote his upcoming Hindi play, “Mera Woh Matlab Nehi Tha” at the Copernicus Center in Chicago, Aug. 14.

Kher spoke in detail about the play, his co-stars and himself. Written and directed by Rakesh Bedi, the collaboration also marks the return of actress Neena Gupta to theater. “Mera Woh Matlab Nehi Tha” originally opened on Kher’s 60th birthday, March 7.

“Birthdays are meant for special occasions. I am opening my new play #MeraWohMatlabNahiTha today. Work makes one feel younger and happening,” Kher shared with friends and fans on Twitter on his special day. The play has been praised by popular artists and actors on social media.

In response to a question from Desi Talk’s Syed Sheeraz about Gupta’s character Hemi and her link to Pakistan, Kher, who is of Kashmiri Pandit ancestry, responded “My fans from Pakistan have always shown me a lot of love, and it adds another layer to Neena’s character.” To another query about his life as an actor, Kher quipped “Stars fade, actors mature.”

There was a very open and heartfelt discussion between him and the attendees about his relationship with acting, cinema and his role as a celebrity in the digital media era. With over 400 movies under his belt, Kher is known for his versatility. From the lovable, comic father in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge;” to the ruthless villain and cold businessman in “Karma” and “Rang De Basanti;” to the stern father grappling with generational and cultural challenges in “Bend It Like Beckham;” to the enabling doctor in “Silver Linings Playbook,” legendary actor Kher has played more roles than almost any other actor. It is this malleability that allows him to be equally at home working with Yash Chopra and Karan Johar, as he is with Ang Lee and Woody Allen.

Set in Lodhi Garden, New Delhi, “Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha” is about two lovers who drifted apart for no apparent reason. They meet 35 years later and try to discover the truth behind their separation. It is not a love story, but a story about relationships, misunderstandings and our awkwardness in dealing with the truth. It’s amazing how someone who meant the world to you sometimes turns into merely an acquaintance over time.

The single performance of the play, Aug. 14, will be brought by SAHIL & LA TAN in association with international promoter Star Promotion, Inc.
