Ekal USA, a Houston-based non-profit working on education among poor children in India has pledged a total of some $330,000, including $100,000 from Ekal-USA and the rest in Indian Rupee equivalent from Ekal-India, to help the survivors of the recent Nepal earthquakes.
Ekal that runs free schools for children in India has deep roots in Nepal as well where it had 1,500 schools operating in rural before the 7.8 magnitude earthquake April 25 hit the Himalayan nation, killing an estimated 9,000 people and injuring three times of those who perished.
Immediately after the catastrophe, Ekal coordinated rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts with its 1,600 strong Nepali volunteers.
For the non-profit, rehabilitation is the major task ahead, an official said. Its plans include building four hostels for quake-hit children to look after them and to establishing community centers in badly affected village for collective activities. Ekal is also exploring possibilities of adopting ‘villages’ for rehabilitations. “This is going to require lot more funding and Ekal is seeking generous financial support from the community-at-large,’ it said in a statement.
The nonprofit asked the community to visit www.ekal.org for more information about the nonprofit that is said to be a tax-exempt and registered charity Organization in U.S.
