The Republican Party in its push to recruit minorities and build a more inclusive image, has identified several minority elected and party officials, including two Indian-Americans, who are expected to help galvanize a more diverse electorate and field minority leaders during the 2015-2016 election cycle.
On June 17, the Republican State Leadership Committee re-launched its Future Majority Project which “seeks to recruit, train, and elect Republican candidates from diverse communities on the state level who better represent the full diversity of America,” a release from the GOP said. The new board includes Niraj Antani, state representative in the Ohio State House representing the 42nd District and Janak Joshi, state representative from the 16th District in Colorado.
Former Oklahoma Speaker of the House and Republican National Committee “Rising Star” T.W. Shannon is the chair and high-profile Governors Susana Martinez and Brian Sandoval of New Mexico and Nevada are serving as honorary co-chairs.
“Both Representatives Antani of Ohio and Joshi of Colorado represent the success of the Republican Party’s efforts to reach out to the South Asian community, and the broad appeal our party has to voters and prospective candidates from all backgrounds,” Raj Shah, research director at the RNC told News India Times. “If Republicans are to win the future, we must engage all communities throughout America.”
In 2013-2014, the Future Majority Project recruited hundreds of new candidates and elected 43 new leaders to office according to the GOP.
This cycle, party leaders hope the FMP will recruit 250 new and diverse candidates and see 50 of those candidates appointed or elected to office. Other goals set forth for FMP include getting 10 individuals from minorities and women’s constituencies enter state-level office and spend around $7 million or more to achieve the goals.
