An Indian-American girl from Illinois was one of 55 children to win the White House recipe challenge led by First Lady Michelle Obama. The winners were selected from among nearly a thousand entries to the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge launched four years ago by Mrs. Obama jointly with PBS flagship station WGBH Boston, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Nine-year old Shreya Patel served up a Garam Masala Quinoa Burger with Raita, and will join the 55 others, each representing a state, 4 territories as well as the District of Columbia, to attend the”Kids State Dinner” at the White House July 10. The recipes were not available as this went to press and will be posted on the Web July 10.

The nationwide recipe challenge for kids aims to promote cooking and healthy eating by aspiring young chefs. Each winner will be accompanied by a parent or guardian to the State Dinner. They will also get to visit the White House Kitchen Garden that the First Lady has popularized and to which she has invited scores of children over the years.

“Reading over these winning recipes, two things become very clear. America’s kids are passionate about not just eating healthy food, but about cooking healthy food, too.  And we’re raising some truly inventive and talented chefs,” said the First Lady, adding she couldn’t wait to try out the dishes.

The competition invites 8-12-year-olds from across the nation to create a lunchtime recipe that is healthy, affordable, original, and delicious.  Following on the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, the young chefs had to adhere to guidelines spelt out at ChooseMyPlate.gov to ensure recipes met the USDA’s recommended nutrition recommendations. Entries had to represent each of the food groups, either in one dish or as parts of a lunch meal, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.

The winners were chosen by a panel of judges that included among others Debra Eschmeyer, Executive Director of Let’s Move!; Michel Nischan, renowned chef and President & CEO of the Wholesome Wave Foundation, and Tanya Steel, a children’s healthy eating expert who has been involved with each Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, as well as; former winners of the contest.
