Two-day “Jeopardy!” champ Choyon Manjrekar had such a big lead on May 25 that when he didn’t know the answer to the Final Jeopardy question, he chose to clown around a bit. Manjrekar’s response – “Kinky Boots” – to the question “A Christian hymn and Jewish holiday hymn are both titled this, also the name of a Tony-nominated musical,” has put him more in the limelight than his two-day win in the show.
“Yes indeed, whenever people go to church or to temple, they sing, ‘Kinky Boots,’” joked host Alex Trebek. “Kinky Boots” is indeed a Tony-award winning musical. However, it is not a Christian or Jewish hymn.
The correct answer: “Rock of Ages,” or “Ma’oz Tzur.”
Despite the wrong and hilarious answer, Manjerkar, principle planner with the City of Providence Planning Commission, did not jeopardize his commanding lead, totaling his winnings to more than $56,000. The fact that Manjrekar did not wager any money guaranteed him the lead.
In an interview online with contestants after the episode aired, Manjrekar explained, “Musicals aren’t exactly my forte…That’s the first thing that came to mind…It was either that or the “Book of Mormon,” but I guess that wasn’t a Jewish book…so I panicked and put down something…The moral of this story is bone up on musicals next time.”
Earlier in the show too, Manjekar had fun with the Trebek when the later expressed some surprise at the contestant’s hobby of making and collecting clothes for his cats. “There’s a great world of feline fashion out there,” he told Trebek. Manjrekar also tweeted a photo of his dapper-looking cat, Henry, after the episode aired.
