First aired in 2012, “The Mindy Project” was a landmark moment for diversity on television. The very existence of the series proved a platform for discussions about the representation of women and minorities on television, and one episode sparked a debate about sexual consent.

As Mindy Kaling she herself put it last year: “I’m a f—ing Indian woman who has her own f—ing show!” And: “I am a feminist. So if that leaks into every episode of the show, I (a) like it and (b) don’t do it on a conscious level.”

The problem: Relatively few people watched the show, and now it has been canceled by Fox after three seasons, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“This is literally the worst news in the history of awful news,” E! wrote.

Those who want to find out whether the fictional Mindy Lahiri and her sometimes reluctant beau Danny Castellano, also the father of her unborn child, will end up together may have to wait for Hulu. According to the Hollywood Reporter, producers are in talks with the streaming service to bring future episodes of the show to the Internet.

“I’m so proud of the show,” Kaling told E! in March about the prospect of a fourth season. “There’s nothing really that I would do differently in the way that we’ve built the those [sic] in the last couple of years, and I love our relationship with Fox and I would love for it to just continue.”

Alas, ’twas not to be.
