In view of work done by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin in this country and in India, Dr. Seema Jain, president-elect of AAPI, who takes over in June at the 33rd annual AAPI convention in Orlando, Florida, outlined some of her objectives for the national organization. Her major goals include women’s health, uplifting the image of AAPI in the academic field; mainstreaming AAPI in view of its standing as second only to the American Medical Association in terms of its size. The organization aims to meet the needs of more than 100,000 physicians of Indian origin in the U.S.
Dr. Jain said she wants to direct her energy to grow AAPI’s presence and highlight its accomplishments in India during the June 1-3 Global Health Summit in New Delhi, raising awareness on women’s health in India in areas such as cardiology, cancer and stroke/cerebral vascular problems. She will also pay particular attention to maternal and infant mortality, finding long-term solutions through changing the curriculum at Indian medical schools to include post-partum and mental health training. She noted that working with the Indian Medical Association, AAPI had been able to start a campaign to put up large billboards on women’s health issues. Along with Save a Life Foundation, a non-governmental organization in India committed to improve road safety and emergency care, AAPI has helped to raise awareness about wearing helmets and seat belts, and getting the Good Samaritan law passed by the Indian parliament two months ago, she said. The Good Samaritan law allows individuals at the site of an accident to help those involved in an accident or in distress. She recently returned from India where she traveled with a group of doctors to 5 hospitals around the country to assess which one would be most suitable to house a Trauma Center.
“Women’s health is my main concern. Women are nurturers but they always sit on the back bench,” said Dr. Jain.
