CHICAGO

Illinois Premier League Cricket Conference (IPLCC) held the opening ceremony for its summer-long 2015 cricket tournament here at Warren Park, off Devon and Western avenues, April 26. Guests included state senator Ira L. Silverstein; 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein; Air India Midwest Manager Nakul S. Chand; Hanmi Bank Vice President Akbar Lalani; and Park Supervisor of Warren Park DianaLynn Schilz. The morning ceremony, overseen by IPLCC president Raees Nizami, was followed by the first game of the season. Master of ceremonies was IPLCC secretary Razi Moizuddin.

Having officially cut the ribbon, the Alderman tossed the coin that determined that Anjuman would get to bat first. Before the actual match, the “Might Sixes Challenge” was opened to everyone just for this opening day, to see how far the batsman can hit the ball in three tries. Even senator Silverstein and Lalani could not resist trying their hands at batting.

In this first season’s first match, Chicago’s Anjuman Club beat Hyderabad’s Sultans, scoring 170 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs, with Ayaz Patel making 83 runs and Mohammed Moiz 25 runs for 4 wickets. Sultans scored 99 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs: Mohammed Wajahat scored 25 and Yaseen Patel scored 10 runs for 3 wickets. Ayaz Patel was declared “man of the match.”

The many sponsors included Air India, which provided the uniforms of both competing teams, Hanmi Bank and Desi Talk, represented also in person.
