Dnyaneshwar M. Mulay, consul general of India in New York, on April 17 launched a website specially for watching movies made by Non-resident Indians in the presence of prominent members of the Indian-American community. The event was held at the consulate ballroom. Mulay congratulated Tirlok Malik, founder of NRI TV and Film Club, and said the website is a wonderful idea and was very much needed. “It will be a bridge between Hollywood and Bollywood by creating NRI-wood,” Mulay said.

The website – www.NRITVFILMCLUB.com – will enable movie connoisseurs to watch films made by NRIs, about NRIs, with NRIs. The website, a collective effort of filmmakers and artists, also aims to be a platform to promote and create opportunities for NRI talents in the area of film, television, and new media.. The website is launched with 15 films made in America by NRI filmmakers with local Indian-American talent. Some of the films are award winning and have been shown worldwide. The film club will also be producing and showing more films, TV sitcoms, and web series with Indian-American and multi-cultural talents. Yearly membership for the club is $35.

According to Malik, these films have immigrant themes but with universal emotions. Several of them do not reach a wider audience, “but with the new technology of streaming movies just like Netflix, we are able to bring these movies for the audience to watch worldwide,” he said.

The club also has support from Desi Talk publisher and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Sudhir M. Parikh and TV Asia Chairman H.R. Shah.
