Two young men were convicted March 16 in connection with a 2012 shooting in East Oakland, California, that killed a 15-year-old girl and injured the intended target, a 14-year-old boy. Vijay Bhushan, 22, and Lilron Jones, 19, who face charges for first-degree murder, attempted murder and weapons enhancements, could face lengthy prison terms when they are sentenced May 22.

Jubrille Jordan was shot dead on Dec. 30, 2012, while standing near the 14-year-old boy, whom the men believed was responsible for a killing five months earlier in East Oakland. Jubrille was standing with friends and a baby as she was headed to the Coliseum BART Station to visit the Bayfair Center shopping mall in San Leandro, when Jones and a second man, Marquise Thompson, opened fire, SFGate reported.

The assailants believed that the 14-year-old had killed their friend, 15-year-old Hadari Askari, in the same complex in July 2012. Hadari, who was enrolled in an Oakland Fire Department training program, was reportedly gunned down after a short chase by hooded assailants. No one has been arrested in his slaying.

Hadari, Jones, Bhushan and Thompson lived in the Lower Bottoms neighborhood in West Oakland.
